All women, and anyone with a cervix aged between 25-64 (some people will be offered screening until they are 70, depending on previous results) should have this simple procedure normally every five years. We have an automatic recall system in operation to remind you when your next smear is due. The practice nurse carries out the check.
The frequency of cervical screening tests in Scotland changed in 2020.
It’s important to attend for cervical screening every time you’re invited. You’ll be invited for routine screening every 5 years.
You may be invited for more regular screening if previous cervical screening results have found HPV. This is so healthcare professionals can check to see if:
- your body has managed to get rid of the virus
- there are any new changes to the cells of your cervix
Remember, cell changes are not cervical cancer. Having them does not mean you’ll develop cervical cancer. Most cell changes will get better themselves or with treatment. Regular screening, however, means that if you do develop cancer it will be treated early.
